Seattle Art Museum ~
Are you planning a trip to Seattle in the next few months? Don’t miss this extraordinary exhibit at the Seattle Art Museum Yves Saint Laurent – The Perfection of Style.
If my dear friend Shari, who is a Seattlite and a Seattle Art Museum volunteer hadn’t told me, I would have missed it! So now it is my turn to share with you this AMAZING fashion adventure.
The exhibition only runs from October – January 8, 2017. But just in case you live near by or want to plan a trip to my favorite city in the Pacific Northwest – Here are the details ~
Unpublished documents, sketches, notes, letters and drawings from the Foundation Pierre Berge were on display in Seattle. There were research sketches from his early days as Christian Dior’s assistant and even paper dolls he created as a young adolescent. Oh and the clothes! Mannequin after glorious mannequin all dressed up and ready to hit the town! To be so close to these couture garments, to see the innovative designs and workmanship was such a privilege.
Yves Saint Laurent (YSL)
Confident in his artistic ability, in 1953 YSL entered a contest offered by the International Wool Secretariat. Only in his early twenties, he won this prize, was discovered by Vogue Magazine’s Editor Michel de Runoff and encouraged to attend Ecole de la chambre syndicale de la couture in Paris. The editor then introduced the young prodigy to Christian Dior and he was hired on the spot.
The exhibit is so well curated and creatively displayed that we walked around in a fashion coma of sorts. Shari and I were enamored with the personal details, incredible drawings, short videos and highlights from his career. What a perfect way to spend an afternoon. It spans his forty-four year career and demonstrates that “the power of style reaches well beyond the ephemeral fluctuations of fashion.”
There were 110 different dresses/gowns/outfits to see live and in person! They were displayed by decade and it was so much fun to see how fashion evolved and how outrageous and expressive couture garments can be!
You don’t need to be a fashionista to enjoy this exhibit, just someone who is interested in art history and appreciates popular culture. The Seattle Art Museum (SAM) is a must visit whenever you travel to Seattle! The museum is open everyday but Tuesday. Let me know if you go!
