Fun times on our trip to Austin ~

Our trip to Austin was filled with several unique, new adventures, not the least of which was a stay in a haunted hotel. What? Some say that The Driskill, which was built in 1886, with an obviously rich and compelling history, may possibly have some uninvited guests!. Read below for more about this…

The Driskill

As you walk in to the grand marble lobby with towering columns and spectacular stained glass dome, you sense that you have somehow stepped back in time. Luxurious and opulent, with a magnificent staircase on one side, you can almost smell the history in the room.

A Brand New Online Travel Magazine Adventure!

Two award-winning travel writers, Janice and Irene asked me to be one of the original contributors for their online travel magazine Getting on Travel, which offers a fresh take on luxury for the travelers over fifty. Now this is not to say that everything we write isn’t for just about everyone, but we are focusing on the people whose children are grown and flown from the nest, with more time to spend traveling.

At this time in our lives, our travel requirements have changed a bit and really where can we go to find this type of information? Both Janice and Irene are avid world-wide travelers and knew that this generation has seen a bit of the world. We are looking for fresh ideas and to find new experiences. Most of us would like a little added comfort and luxury when we travel as well.

When the list of great restaurants in Washington D.C. contains at least one hundred possibilities, how do you choose? I know…first world problems, but seriously it wasn’t easy!

I scoured DC Eater, Washington D.C. and the detailed list that my traveling-foodie-friend Angela gave me and then made some hard choices. Our longtime friends Angela and Jon enjoy lively restaurants and delicious chef-inspired dishes as much as we do. The four of us had a blast and ate our way through New Orleans a few months ago and we barely dented our list.

What are the best things to do in Washington D.C.? How much time do you have?

Washington D.C. is an incredible place to visit (and live) and I found that people I talked with about visiting there fell into one of two categories. One, was that they have visited several times and knew the city really well and the other was a person who always wanted to go but for whatever reason never seemed to have gotten there! It was interesting to hear about the two extremes.

What kind of ingredients do we need to enjoy the perfect weekend in Scottsdale? For this discerning empty nester couple, our list includes, fabulous accommodations, delicious food, fun activities, pleasant weather, beautiful scenery, a cultural excursion, spring baseball and best of all, simple relaxation.

Yes please to the entire list! Craig and I have wanted to spend an adventurous weekend in Scottsdale, AZ for quite some time. However, we truly first and foremost wanted to attend Spring Training to see the Los Angeles Dodgers!

Spring training is super kick back and relaxed and a fun way to get up close and personal with the teams.

We are huge fans of Dodger “Manager of the Year” and UCLA Bruin, Dave Roberts and are enthusiastically optimistic of our chances for a successful season!

Line up ten discerning travelers and each will offer a different idea for the perfect destination for Spring Break. Craig and I are not huge fans of flying to popular beach vacation spots like Mexico or Florida during Spring Break. No offense to the college students, but they travel by the thousands this time of year and I would rather not hang out with them. They probably hope the lounges at poolside are not full of empty nesters either!

Crazy About Instagram – An Empty Nester Solution

Yes, I am enamored with Instagram!

Need I even mention that Facebook is not the place it used to be? Every time I go on my feed (which I swear only shows me the same 20 people) I am always hoping to see someone’s travels, a grandchild, a graduation, an inspiring workout, some delicious food, just a little P-O-S-I-T-I-V-E posting.

I am not oblivious, I know what is happening in the world and I have strong opinions, but I won’t be sharing them on FB.

Instagram is HUGE and growing and I have written for years that it is the most fun social media platform. I love the creativity and no one cares about your personal information, everyone can see and like what you share if they find you. You can use a hashtag to find anything you are interested in. Maybe its #pizza or #travel or #ocean, the more specific your hashtag the closer you get to what you are looking for. Check out these Instagrammers for some awesome and engaging photography!
